University of Canberra offers W J Weeden postgraduate research  scholarships to applicants of exceptional research potential  undertaking a higher degree by research. This scholarship is open to  domestic and international students and is generously funded by the family  of the late W J Weeden.To be eligible for Weeden Stipend, an applicant  must have completed a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or be  regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of  attainment. Weeden Stipends are provided to assist with general living  costs through the provision of a stipend. The duration of a full-time  Weeden Stipend is three years for a candidate undertaking a Doctor of  Philosophy course. Selection of Weeden Stipend recipients will be  undertaken by the University Research Scholarships Committee on the basis  of academic merit and research potential. The application deadline is  31 October 2013.

Eligibility: To be eligible for Weeden Stipend, an applicant  must: -Have completed a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours,  or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of  attainment; -Be enrolled, or  be seeking to enrol, as a  full-time candidate in a Doctor of Philosophy course at the  University; -Be a domestic or international applicant to a higher degree by  Research course at University of Canberra; and -Not have consumed more  than 2.5 equivalent full-time study load (EFTSL) (i.e. Have been enrolled  in a maximum of 2.5 years full-time equivalent (FTE) students) in  current enrolment in a higher  degree by research at the time of applying for the Weeden Stipend.

Scholarship Description: WJ Weeden Research Stipend  Scholarships (Weeden Stipends) are awarded to applicants of  exceptional  research potential undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR). Weeden   Stipends are provided to assist with general living costs through the  provision of a stipend. A Weeden Stipend awarded to a recipient on an  international student visa will also cover the cost of required health  insurance premiums for the recipient and their dependants.

Duration of award (s):  The duration  of a full-time Weeden Stipend is three years for a candidate undertaking  a Doctor of Philosophy course. -Scholarship recipients will be assessed  formally no less than annually through the Annual Progress Report process  for continued eligibility of their awards. -The duration of a Weeden Stipend  will be reduced by any period of study undertaken: towards the degree prior  to the commencement of the Weeden Stipend: previously while receiving an  Australian Postgraduate Coursework Award. -Leave allowances, i.e.  University-approved sick leave and parental leave as prescribed in these  conditions, are added to the duration of the recipient’s scholarship.

What does it cover? It offers a stipend (living  allowance) equivalent to the Australian Postgraduate Award ($24,653 per annum  2013 rate, tax free and indexed annually) and is available for the duration of  the course (up to 3 years). The level of the stipend will not be reduced  during the period of the award. The stipend will be paid in  fortnightly installments. Payment is calculated from the date upon  which the recipient commences enrollment in the HDR degree.

Selection criteria: Selection of Weeden Stipend  recipients will be undertaken by the University Research Scholarships  Committee on the basis of academic merit and research potential.

Notification: Only successful applicants will be  notified. University will be  contacting all successful applicants up until the 20th of December 2013.

How to Apply:  If you wish to apply  to undertake a research degree at the University of Canberra and also  wish to apply for a 2014 scholarship, there are two separate  applications to complete: -Application for Higher Degree by  Research – the application and all supporting documentation must be  submitted to research.admissions-at-canberra.edu.au; and -Without your  supporting documentation your application will be severely  disadvantaged. -Submit all completed scholarship forms and  supporting documentation to the Research Students’ Office, research.  scholarship-at-canberra.edu.au by 31 October 2013.
