TAFE NSW’s Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Pathology) trains students for work in medical diagnostics as a laboratory technical officer or laboratory technical assistant. Students learn how disease states in the body are diagnosed and treated, including identifying bacteria and selecting appropriate antibiotics, analysing blood samples for disease states and genetic abnormalities, and collecting and preparing tissue samples to detect cancers.
The course combines theory and practical course work. Students use up-to-date laboratory machinery and equipment, including microscopes, and follow work, health and safety procedures such as disposing of infectious waste and contaminated samples. The qualification is a nationally accredited diploma made up of 18 units of competency: 5 core units and 13 speciality units, delivered as a mix of core and specialty units.
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol. Completion of the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques as evidenced by a copy of your transcript or certificate, or Completion of a Certificate IV or higher in a relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline, as evidenced by your transcript or certificate, or You have technical laboratory skills, knowledge and employment experience as evidenced by a resume highlighting your experience in the area.
