The Diploma of Library and Information Services (BSB50520-01) at TAFE NSW prepares you to become a qualified library technician. You learn how to help library users find and use information with confidence. The course covers core skills in research, reference, copyright and licensing, library systems, and solving digital technology problems, plus cataloguing and classifying print and digital resources. You also learn how to help people understand, assess and use information from digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI).

TAFE NSW teaches the diploma through a mixture of theory and practical course work. It includes practical industry experience through work placement. The qualification requires successfully completing 16 units of competency, including 4 core and 12 specialty units. Learning outcomes also include planning and promoting library programs and community activities, supporting collection development and responding to community needs, and using research and information tools.

This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol. You must complete a written application to help us assess your suitability for this course. In your application, provide: any Library and Information Services qualifications you have completed; any recent work or volunteer experience in the Library and Information Services sector; your highest completed qualification; why you want to study the Diploma of Library and Information Services; your current resume; copies of relevant qualifications and/or academic transcripts.

• Foundation skills: You can understand technical texts and understand what they mean; you can write longer paragraphs and texts that explain your ideas clearly; you can use maths to work out more detailed problems in different settings; you take charge of your learning and can finish tasks on time by yourself; you can speak with confidence in many situations and help lead the conversations.
