TAFE NSW offers the Advanced Diploma of Marine Engineering (Class 1) (Engineer Class 1 - Motor). Students learn to prepare for Class 2 and Class 1 Certificate of Competency with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and for a career as an unlimited chief engineer in international waters. The course combines theory with practical course work across ship power systems, marine electrical boards, and marine control systems, automation and electrical systems.
The qualification is made up of 14 Units of competency: 13 core units and 1 specialty unit. Course outcomes include preparedness for an AMSA oral exam, eligibility to apply for a Certificate of Competency Engineer Class 1 (STCW Chief Engineer Unlimited), exposure to simulated emergency and survival situations, and experience leading a marine team. Completion requires providing a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test evidence.
