TAFE NSW’s Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Class 3 Near Coastal) prepares you to become eligible to apply for your certificate of competency engineer class 3 (near coastal) with the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). You study marine engineering with a focus on basic marine engineering calculations, foundational principles of naval architecture, and knowledge of marine auxiliary boilers, machinery and equipment, control systems and automation, marine diesel engines and systems, and marine electrical systems.

The qualification includes core units and requires successful completion of 19 units of competency, including 19 core units and 0 specialty units. Learning outcomes are achieved through a mixture of theory and practical course work, with study that includes first aid and safety training. You must provide evidence of a learning, literacy and numeracy assessment during your study.

After you graduate, you will be qualified to apply for an oral exam with AMSA in order to receive the certificate of competency engineer class 3 (near coastal). This leads to work as an engineer or second engineer on appropriate vessels within Australian waters, and roles such as Ship's Engineer.

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

• Your Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal)
• An awareness of all AMSA requirements for this qualification
• Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 12 high school level
• TAFE NSW may ask you to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test.
