TAFE NSW’s Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Watchkeeper) equips you to join the international maritime industry. You strengthen your technical skills to work on large ocean-going ships and develop leadership and communication capabilities to work with and manage your crew. The program includes knowledge of low pressure steam boilers, control systems and ship automation, naval architecture, marine electrical systems, marine mechanics, and thermodynamics principles.
The program is delivered as an intensive course with a mix of theory and practical coursework over a 9 month duration. You study a diesel engine or steam engine pathway, with maintenance of internal combustion engines, propulsion plants and auxiliary systems, and basic maintenance of electrical systems and/or steam machinery. Practical work includes a steam boiler workshop, live electrical working panels, automation controllers, hydraulic and pneumatic controllers, and a Kongsberg simulator for real time fault finding, plus simulated survival and firefighting environments.
