The Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watchkeeper Deck) at TAFE NSW trains you for work as an international deck watchkeeper. You study topics that include keeping a vessel stable and seaworthy, navigation safety using bridge equipment and passage planning, and communications such as visual signalling and the global maritime distress and safety system. You also cover leadership and team working for watchkeeping and ship operations.

TAFE NSW describes the course as a mixture of theory and practical course work. You must attend all face-to-face and online classes as per the timetable and participate in all critical training and practical assessments. The course includes experience using bridge simulators and emergency response training, and it offers the opportunity to sit for AMSA block oral examinations, subject to AMSA requirements.

This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

• You must attend an online interview with a teacher to assess your suitability for the course.
• You must show evidence that you have completed at least 12 months sea service on voyages of 24 hours duration. At least 6 months of this service must have been as understudy of the officer in charge of a navigation watch or equivalent. This experience must have taken place on vessels as specified by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
