The TAFE NSW Higher Education Diploma of Trauma-Informed Care and Practice equips you to understand and analyse the concepts of trauma and trauma-informed care. You learn to apply a trauma-informed framework when working with individuals and communities affected by trauma, and to use a strengths-based and recovery-oriented approach to practice. You also develop skills to use Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing principles, practices, and healing frameworks in context, and to use evidence-based practices including communication, counselling and case management.

TAFE NSW delivers this course part-time over two years. Completion requires you to successfully complete 8 subjects (80 credit points) made up of 8 core subjects and 0 elective subjects. Learning combines theory and practical course work. You also develop workplace culture contributions, self-care strategies, and critical reflection to improve your practice.

The course is designed for roles in trauma-informed specialisation and broader community services positions, including work with children and young people who have experienced trauma, First Nations people and communities, and people who have experienced domestic, family and sexual violence. It can also provide pathways into careers such as community services worker, youth worker, family support worker, mental health worker, child protection worker, and case manager/case worker.

This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

You must demonstrate that you have achieved one of the following:

• A NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its equivalent or
• A Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation or its equivalent or
• A completed certificate IV or higher vocational qualification or
• Completion of at least one year full-time study or equivalent in a degree course at a higher education institution

Note: Your certificates, transcripts and other entry requirement evidence must be certified through a Justice of the Peace or other authorising officer
