Australia Judge Ralph J Perdriau international Awards

The University of Sydney offers the Judge Ralph J Perdriau Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Common Law to support research students from the Sydney Law School to conduct research in common law. The scholarship is established by a bequest and is intended to support higher degree by research students in the University of Sydney Law School who are researching in common law.

The scholarship is for study in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) by Research within the Sydney Law School, for full-time or part-time study. Candidates must be willing to conduct research in common law and must hold at least one specified law degree qualification.

Selection is based on academic merit, and area of study and/or research proposal. The scholarship is awarded on the nomination of the Sydney Law School Associate Dean (Research Education), or nominated delegates. Preference is given to commencing candidates, with limited exceptions for currently enrolled full-time or part-time PhD or LLM by Research students demonstrating progress and exceptional research achievements.

The scholarship can be awarded as a primary or supplementary scholarship. When offered as primary stipend, it provides an allowance up to $55,000 per annum for specific maximum durations for full-time LLM by Research or full-time PhD, with no extension possible. When offered as supplementary (stipend), it provides an allowance to match a total stipend value up to $55,000 per annum for the same maximum durations, also with no extension possible. Periods of study already undertaken prior to commencement are deducted from the maximum duration; the scholarship is for commencement in the relevant research period and cannot be deferred without prior permission from the Sydney Law School Associate Dean (Research Education).

• Have an unconditional offer of admission to study full-time or part-time in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) by Research within the Sydney Law School, or be currently enrolled to study full-time or part-time in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Laws (LLM) by Research within the Sydney Law School.
• Be willing to conduct research in common law.
• Hold at least one of the following law degrees: a Bachelor of Laws (Honours First Class) or equivalent; a Master of Laws by Research; a Master of Laws by Coursework including a research component equivalent to 25% of one year’s full-time enrolment; or a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree together with research and/or professional experience deemed to be equivalent to first class honours.
• For supplementary stipend candidates: be a recipient of a primary scholarship from the University of Sydney that provides a stipend allowance.

• Allowance up to $55,000 per annum (primary stipend), for full-time LLM by Research up to 1.75, and for full-time PhD up to 3.5; no extension possible.
• Allowance to match a total stipend value (primary plus supplementary) up to $55,000 per annum (supplementary stipend), for full-time LLM by Research up to 1.75, and for full-time PhD up to 3.5; no extension possible.
• When offered as primary or supplementary, the scholarship value ranges from $2,000 to $55,000; exact value determined by the Selection Committee, ensuring the total amount the student may receive (primary plus supplementary) does not exceed $55,000 per annum.
• A part-time enrolled recipient is provided a stipend allowance equivalent to 50% of the full-time stipend rate, for up to 3.5 for LLM by Research, or up to 7 for PhD students, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
• Scholarship cannot cover academic tuition fees and the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) for an international recipient.
• The scholarship may also be awarded as a one-off payment (value and amount determined in the scholarship offer letter).
• Scholarship payment is made on receipt of the Scholarship Acceptance Form.
