Maria Teresa Savio Hooke Research Scholarship in Italian Studies

The Maria Teresa Savio Hooke Research Scholarship in Italian Studies is described as a postgraduate research scholarship funded by a donation from Maria Teresa Savio Hooke. It supports a PhD student in the School of Languages and Cultures to research Italian studies, with benefits provided as either a stipend or tuition fee support depending on domestic or international status.

Eligibility is for applicants who have an unconditional or conditional offer of admission, or who are applying for admission, to study a PhD at the School of Languages and Cultures. Applicants must be willing to research Italian studies.

Selection is based on academic merit, the area of study and/or research proposal, and a personal statement addressing the impact the scholarship will have on their research. Preference is given to research in culture of Renaissance Italy that may advance understanding of contemporary societies. A selection committee consisting of the Chair of Department of Italian Studies (or nominated delegate) and at least two other academic staff in the Department of Italian Studies nominates the successful applicant.

Support is provided for up to 3.5 years for a domestic recipient enrolled full-time, or stipend support at 50 percent for an equivalent full-time duration for a domestic part-time recipient. An international recipient receives academic course fees for up to 14 research periods for full-time study or part-time equivalent. Progression depends on attending and passing the annual progress evaluation. Recreation and sick leave arrangements are included for domestic recipients, and conditions restrict overseas research and award suspension/termination, including termination for failure to maintain eligibility and possible repayment in misconduct cases.

• Must have an unconditional or conditional offer of admission or be applying for admission to study a PhD at the School of Languages and Cultures.
• Must be willing to research Italian studies.
• Scholarship is offered subject to having an unconditional offer of admission to study in a PhD within the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

• Domestic, full-time: stipend allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend rate for up to 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
• Domestic, part-time: stipend allowance equivalent to 50 percent of the full-time stipend rate for the equivalent full-time duration outlined above.
• International, full-time: academic course fees for up to 14 research periods, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
• International, part-time: academic course fees for the part-time equivalent duration outlined in the full-time clause.
• Extension: not possible.
• Recreation leave: up to 20 working days each year of the scholarship (may be accrued); unused leave forfeited when the scholarship is terminated or complete.
• Sick leave: up to 10 working days each year of the scholarship (may be accrued); students with family responsibilities/caring responsibilities/domestic violence may convert up to five days of annual sick leave to carer’s leave on presentation of medical certificates.
• Research overseas restrictions: may not normally conduct research overseas within the first six months of award; up to 12 months of research outside Australia may be conducted with approvals, subject to conditions.
