UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship in Finland: Research Opportunity

The UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme gives registered doctoral students the opportunity to use UNU-WIDER’s resources and facilities for PhD dissertation or thesis research on developing economies. It also includes working with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest.

The programme is aimed at applicants enrolled in a PhD programme who have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates in other social sciences may apply, while UNU-WIDER is described as an economics-focused institute. The programme is especially addressed at researchers at later stages of their PhD.

Selection is described as highly competitive, with only a limited number of fellows accepted. The programme encourages applications from suitably qualified early-career, female, and developing country researchers. Submissions on topics related to the UNU-WIDER work programme are particularly welcome.

Visiting PhD fellows typically spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER and prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their findings. The programme may allow fellows the opportunity to publish research in the WIDER Working Paper Series. Financial assistance includes a travel grant, medical insurance for sickness and accident during the stay, and a monthly stipend of EUR 2,100 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the fellowship period; it does not cover expenses related to dependents.

1. Submit an online application form (UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme twice each year).
2. Complete and submit the application form when available (the application form will become available 1st of March and 1st of September at 00:00 UTC+3 each year).
3. Meet the submission deadline for the chosen round (deadlines for submission are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 UTC+3 each year).
4. Upload your curriculum vitae as part of the application.
5. Arrange for your PhD supervisor to provide UNU-WIDER with a letter of reference by email to [email protected] (the reference letter also certifies that you are enrolled in a PhD programme at your university).
6. After submission, wait for the final decision by email approximately one month after the closing deadline.
7. If selected, confirm your decision to take up UNU-WIDER's offer two weeks after being contacted.
