Canada Arrell Food Institute Scholarship

The Arrell Food Institute Scholarships are funded by the Arrell Family Foundation and support research focused on agriculture and food. The award provides 3 awards of $50,000/year for up to two years for Masters students, paid as 3 equal payments per year at the beginning of each semester for the duration of the award.

The scholarship is available to Masters students entering a full-time Master’s program in the fall semester following the application deadline. Recipients must be supervised or co-supervised by one of the Arrell Food Institute Chairs, and the proposed research must align with the Arrell Food Institute mission described as producing more healthy and nutritious food with less negative environmental and social impacts.

Selection is based on outstanding academic achievement; relevance of the proposed research and personal motivation to the vision of the Arrell Food Institute; and evidence of involvement and experience with community such as volunteer, knowledge sharing, or otherwise. Applicants are expected to have applied for admission, including submission of two referee assessments and all transcripts of study by the application deadline, to an eligible graduate program submitted by April 15 annually.

Recipients must maintain full-time registration and satisfactory progress in their graduate program. Award recipients are expected to contribute time equivalent to UNIV*6050 coursework to collaborative Arrell Food Institute projects over the award period, and to register for UNIV*6050 in the first year of study or commit to an equivalent experiential learning opportunity approved by the supervisor and the AFI Director. Parental leave or other caring responsibilities are considered under the University of Guelph’s normal terms, and deferral of start can be considered for one year with the Supervisor’s agreement and justification rationale.

• Prior study preference: 60% of awardees will be new students to the University of Guelph (no prior undergraduate degrees at the University of Guelph)
• Contribution/learning requirement: award recipients are expected to contribute time equivalent to UNIV*6050 coursework to collaborative Arrell Food Institute projects and to register for UNIV*6050 in their first year of study or commit to an equivalent experiential learning opportunity approved by their supervisor and the AFI Director

3. Include a statement of research and personal motivation (2-page maximum with additional 1-page citations list).
4. Submit a CV, unofficial transcripts, names and institutional or professional emails of 2–3 references, and the proposed AFI Chair supervisor or co-supervisor.
5. Submit the application using the required components listed on the page, including “Apply By Letter,” “Reference Letter,” and the Arrell Food Institute Scholarship application materials.
