Canada University of Victoria CSRS Graduate Fellowships

The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) at the University of Victoria welcomes applications from graduate students for various one-year fellowship appointments commencing September 1,. The fellowships are for projects that involve the scholarly study of religion in relation to any aspect of society and culture, covering contemporary and historical topics.

The fellowships are for graduate students (both MA and PhD) whose projects fall within the Centre’s research mandate. Awards are meant for UVic students, and at least one award is reserved for a non-UVic student each year. Support is intended for students who have completed coursework and will be at the writing stage of their thesis or dissertation during the fellowship period.

Applicants are reviewed by the CSRS Program Committee in December. Students who have received a previous CSRS award at the MA level may only reapply after registering in a PhD program, and PhD students may hold a CSRS fellowship only once. Applicants may simultaneously apply for fellowships but may only accept one award because of dedicated office space and regular in-person attendance.

Fellows receive $6,500 for one year (12 months or prorated according to the fellowship length), office space on campus, access to UVic libraries and special collections, a mailbox, scanner, and photocopier services, and enhanced opportunities for research networking and exchange, plus admission to CSRS coffee talks, public lectures, and social life. Fellows are expected to regularly participate in weekly activities and use the office space, and to give a public lecture on a theme in their research; the Centre may reassess the award for fellows not meeting conditions during the fellowship period.

• Graduate students (MA and PhD).Project falls within the Centre’s research mandate: scholarly study of religion in relation to any aspect of society and culture (contemporary and historical), including topics such as ethics, health, environment, public policy, technology, gender, human conflict, art, literature, the media, law, philosophy, or the natural sciences.Religion does not need to be the central focus of the research but should be a significant consideration.Intended for UVic students; at least one award is reserved for a non-UVic student each year.Applicants have completed coursework.Applicants will be at the writing stage of their thesis or dissertation during the fellowship period.Students who received a previous CSRS award at the MA level may only reapply after registering in a PhD program.PhD students may hold a CSRS fellowship only once.Because the fellowship includes dedicated office space and regular in-person attendance, applicants may only accept one award if they are granted multiple awards before commencing a fellowship.Any research involving human subjects will require approval of the UVic Human Ethics Review Board.

5. 5. Arrange for two PDF letters of support for the project—one from the applicant's supervisor and one from another professor—to be emailed directly to [email protected].
