Exemption Scholarship - Universite de Montreal

The UdeM exemption scholarship program is designed to support international candidates in their university studies through an exemption from the tuition fees normally charged to international students. Université de Montréal frames the program as helping international candidates attend its francophone research university and contribute to its educational mission through increased cultural diversity.

The scholarship is intended for international students except French and French-speaking Belgian students. Eligibility requires having received an offer of admission to a UdeM study program and being admitted for the purpose of studying at Université de Montréal, with additional conditions tied to study authorization and continuous full-time enrollment. The program includes undergraduate degree programmes and graduate studies at the master’s and PhD levels.

Université de Montréal states that the scholarship value for undergraduate degree programs is determined using academic record excellence as the only evaluation criterion, assessed based on transcripts provided during the admission application. After an offer of admission is accepted, candidates are evaluated to determine eligibility and the amount of the exemption scholarship, and they receive a reply by email indicating whether they are eligible and, if so, the amount awarded.

The exemption is deducted from tuition fees. Université de Montréal describes undergraduate amounts by level and credit loads, and graduate amounts by type (master’s research and non-research; PhD). It also states that if eligibility conditions are not met (including withdrawal triggers listed in the eligibility section), the scholarship may be withdrawn. Current students maintain their acquired rights, and the document provided by email is for future reference.

• International student (except French and French-speaking Belgian students).
• Have received an offer of admission to a study program at UdeM (as of Fall 2020).
• Not be enrolled in an independent study program or short undergraduate program as of the Winter 2024 session (e.g., certificate, major, minor, short program or preparatory year program for university studies).
• Have valid study authorizations (CAQ and study permit) for all sessions of their study program.
• Be continuously enrolled full time (unless absence is approved) for their entire study program.
• Not benefit from another form of tuition fee exemption.
• If one of the above conditions is not met, the UdeM exemption scholarship may be withdrawn.

• Graduate programs – Master’s (partial exemption scholarship from additional tuition fees normally charged to international students), deducted from tuition fees.

• For writing and correction sessions in master’s programs, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.
• Graduate programs – PhD: complete waiver of the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students (bursary allows benefit of the same tuition fees as Québec graduate studies students), deducted from tuition fees.

1. Apply for admission. Before completing the application form, respect the application deadlines and check the admissions requirements for the study programs of interest.
2. Submit your application, then follow up on your file and receive an offer of admission in your Centre étudiant.
3. Wait for email reply after accepting your offer of admission. Candidates do not need to apply for the UdeM Exemption Scholarship; Université de Montréal evaluates candidates to determine eligibility and amount, and emails eligibility and the awarded amount.
