Four Year Doctoral Fellowship , University of British Columbia

The Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) is a doctoral funding program administered by the Graduate School at The University of British Columbia (UBC). UBC states that the program provides recipients with $24,000 in stipend funding plus tuition per year, for up to four years, and is intended to attract and support domestic and international doctoral students with stable, base-level funding for doctoral studies and research.

4YF may be held by domestic and international students. In general, it is offered to students beginning their first year of full time PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies, and it may also be offered to continuing students. 4YF funding may be offered for up to four years, with possible shorter duration in some circumstances subject to the 4YF Guidelines.

Selection is based on academic excellence, upon the recommendation of the graduate program. Nomination is handled through UBC graduate programs, which review incoming and continuing students and offer Four Year Fellowships to their very best students, with priority given to incoming students.

4YF funding can be held for up to four years, and is subject to satisfactory academic progress. 4YF holders are required to apply for other funding to maintain their eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents must apply each year for Tri-Agency funding if eligible or forfeit remaining 4YF funding; international students are not required to submit an annual Affiliated Fellowship competition application but may choose to compete for higher-stipend Affiliated Fellowships.

• Citizenship: Canadian and Permanent Resident and International students may hold 4YF.
• Degree level: Doctoral (PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies).
• Timing of study: In general, offered to students beginning their first year of full time PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies; may be offered to continuing students.
• Duration: 4YF funding may be offered for up to four years, but duration may be less in some circumstances (see 4YF Guidelines).
• Academic progress: Funding is subject to satisfactory academic progress.
• Tri-Agency automatic designates: Students holding Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships automatically become 4YF designates.
• Tri-Agency tuition coverage condition: Doctoral students who obtain Tri-Agency scholarships may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the external award start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.
• Other external scholarship winners: Other major external scholarship winners selected as 4YF designates may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the 4YF start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.
• Application consideration: All PhD, DMA, and MDPhD applicants offered admission are automatically considered for 4YF funding.
• Maintaining eligibility: 4YF holders are required to apply for other funding to maintain their eligibility for 4YF.
• Tri-Agency requirement for Canadian citizens/PR: Required to apply each year for Tri-Agency funding if eligible; if they do not, they will forfeit remaining 4YF funding.
• International students and Affiliated Fellowship competition: International students are not required to submit an application to the annual Affiliated Fellowship competition, but are eligible to do so if they wish to compete for Affiliated Fellowships with higher stipends.

• Stipend: $24,000 (stipend funding) per year.
• Tuition: full tuition coverage (tuition per year).
• Funding duration: up to four years of doctoral studies (duration may be less in some circumstances; see 4YF Guidelines).
