University of Manitoba Canada Graduate Fellowship (Funding up to $72000)

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is a university graduate fellowship offered to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. The fellowship is for students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment. Students must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for a UMGF.

UMGF master’s awards are valued at $20,000 per year for 12 or 24 months (up to $40,000 total), and UMGF doctoral awards are valued at $25,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months (up to $100,000 total). Departments/units determine the value and duration of an award, and recommended students must meet the eligibility criteria in the eligibility table.

Support is limited based on time completed in the program: master’s students may be eligible for up to 24 months (if at 0 months at the beginning of the program) and PhD students may be eligible for up to 48 months (if at 0 months at the beginning of the program), with eligibility becoming “Not eligible” beyond specified time-in-program ranges. Recipients must decline the award if they are unable to accept it within the academic year, must not exceed 4 years of total UMGF support, must maintain required academic and registration conditions, and must not hold certain other awards of equal or greater value than the annual UMGF.

• Academic standing: must have achieved a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 to be considered; departments may have a higher GPA requirement.
• Citizenship: all students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply.
• Fields of study: students in all fields of graduate study are eligible if their program is eligible for Tri-Agency funding.
• Admission status: must be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a Master’s or Ph.D. student; pre-master’s and occasional students are not eligible.
• Academic maintenance: must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and not receive a grade lower than C+ (including AX courses).
• Research promise: must show great promise as researchers and graduate students.
• Account status: must not have an active, admission-related hold on their student account during their provisional admission period.
• Registration: must be registered full-time in a graduate program of study in the unit that recommends them for a UMGF, and be progressing satisfactorily in the program for which they are funded.
• UMGF total limit: must not have held UMGF support for more than 4 years in total.
• Other funding restrictions: must not be receiving a singular award or scholarship of equal to or greater monetary value than the annual value of the UMGF; if offered an award equal to or exceeding the UMGF value, the student can no longer hold the UMGF and must notify FGPS Awards Office to terminate the award.
• Program movement: must not change programs, route, or departments/units while receiving the UMGF award.
• Recommendation requirement: must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for a UMGF.
• Time-in-program limits (master’s): 0 months (beginning of program) = eligible to receive 24 months of funding; 1–12 months = eligible to receive 12 months of funding; 13 or more months = Not eligible.
• Time-in-program limits (PhD): 0 months (beginning of program) = eligible to receive 48 months of funding; 1–12 months = eligible to receive 36 months of funding; 13–24 months = eligible to receive 24 months of funding; 25–36 months = eligible to receive 12 months of funding; 37 months or more = Not eligible.

• UMGF master’s: $20,000 per year for 12 or 24 months (up to $40,000 total).
• UMGF doctoral: $25,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months (up to $100,000 total).

2. Consult your department or unit for their UMGF application process and deadline.
3. After a department/unit selects students, the department/unit recommends them to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
4. FGPS reviews the recommendations and notifies award recipients with an official letter via email.
