Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD Program in UK 2015
Applications are invited for Commonwealth Scholarships available to citizens of developed Commonwealth countries to pursue PhD and Split-site study at a UK university. The CSC will fund two years of a three-year PhD and the host university will fund one year (for split-site study, the CSC will fund the one year award). Each scholarship provides tuition fees, a living allowance, a return airfare from home country, and other applicable grants. The application deadline is 2 March 2015.

• Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD Program in UK 2015 are awarded in all subjects.
• Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD and Split-site (where the CSC supports one year’s study at a UK university as part of a PhD being undertaken in applicant’s home country) studies at UK universities.
• UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in conjunction with UK universities is providing these Scholarships.

Eligibility: To apply for the awards covered in this prospectus, candidates should:
-Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons
-Be permanently resident in one of the following countries: Australia, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Malta, New Zealand, or Singapore
-Be available to commence their academic studies in the United Kingdom by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2015
-Hold, by October 2015, a first degree of upper second class Honours standard (or above); or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master’s degree

• Students of developed Commonwealth countries (Australia, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Malta, New Zealand, and Singapore) can apply for these scholarships.
• Commonwealth Scholarships for citizens of developed Commonwealth countries (Australia, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Malta, New Zealand, and Singapore) are offered for PhD and split-site PhD study in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in conjunction with UK universities.The CSC does not offer scholarships to candidates from developed Commonwealth countries who have already started their PhD study in the UK.
• Commonwealth Scholarships for developed Commonwealth country citizens are offered under a joint funding arrangement between the CSC and host universities. Under this arrangement, the CSC will fund two years of a three-year PhD and the host university will fund one year (for split-site study, the CSC will fund the one year award).

What does it cover? Each Scholarship provides:
-Student concessionary or other approved airfare to theUnited Kingdom and return on expiry of the Scholarship (the cost of journeys made before finalaward confirmation will not normally be reimbursed,nor can fares be paid for a Scholar’s dependants)
-Approved tuition and examination fees
-A personal maintenance allowance at the rate of £977per month (£1,208 per month for those studying atinstitutions in the London Metropolitan area)
-A grant towards the expenses of preparing a thesis ordissertation, where applicable
-An initial arrival allowance, incorporating an initial clothing grant for Scholars from tropical countries
-A grant for expenses for approved travel within theUnited Kingdom or overseas
-A grant towards fieldwork costs for those Scholarsundertaking doctoral studies for whom a case has been made for fieldwork outside the United Kingdom.This shall not normally exceed one economy classreturn airfare to the fieldwork location
-A paid mid-term fare to their home country for Scholarson three year doctoral awards. Scholars for whomfieldwork fares are provided to their home country shallnot be entitled to a mid-term fare home, nor Scholarswho have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse or childallowances for more than 12 months during their award
-For Scholars selected by the CSC for awards exceeding 18 months, a spouse allowance of £220 permonth is payable provided that the Scholar and spouseare residing together at the same address in the UnitedKingdom. It is not paid when the spouse is also inreceipt of an award. For Scholars accompanied bytheir spouse and children, a child allowance is payableat the rate of £138 per month for the first child, and£108 per month for the second and third child underthe age of 16, provided they are residing with theirparents. The CSC’s spouse and family allowancesrepresent only a contribution towards the costs offamily maintenance in the UK and Scholars shouldexpect and be able to supplement these allowances tosupport family members who choose to come to the UK.
Irrespective of the length of the award, a Scholar who is widowed, divorced or a lone parent will receive an allowance in respect of the first accompanying child and child allowances for the second and third accompanying children.

• Applications are considered according to the following selection criteria:
  -Academic merit of the candidate
  -Quality of the proposal
  -Potential of the candidate to lead in the pursuit of global excellence in research and knowledge
• All applications must be made directly to the CSC using Electronic Application System (EAS). The CSC will not accept any applications which are not submitted via the EAS.
