Bachelor's in Visual and Material Culture Studies
Introduction
Visual and Material Culture Studies is a Bachelor program taught at Mount Allison University, Canada. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.
Visual and Material Culture Studies at Mount Allison University is an interdisciplinary program that studies images, objects, and spaces from various cultural contexts and historical periods. It focuses on non-verbal and non-textual forms of expression, including how images and objects connect to production, appropriation, dissemination, conservation, display, mediation, and interpretation. The program integrates two streams: visual culture (images, viewership, visual media, and practices of looking) and material culture (human-made and modified objects, and making practices).
The curriculum builds a foundation in visual and material culture analysis. First- and second-year courses begin with foundational courses and an introduction to visual and material methodologies, with attention to still images, technology and society, and archaeology. Courses at the level provide entry points to two streams, and upper-year courses offer a selection from both streams. Students can also participate in the Archaeological Field School and access the Centre for Early Modern Visual Culture.
The program is available as a BA in Visual and Material Culture Studies (major or honours), a minor in Visual Communication and Culture, or an undergraduate certificate in Visual Literacy and Culture. The BA major integrates both streams of courses. The minor and certificate focus on visual communication and visual literacy skills, including decoding visual communication, describing and interpreting images, and understanding the impact of visual culture.
