Introduction

Activity Assistant is a program taught at University of the Fraser Valley, Canada. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (1 year) options.

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Activity Assistant part-time program helps you plan and implement recreation activities that promote wellness for older adults in long-term care and related settings. You study activity assistant concepts, wellness and well-being, interpersonal and communication skills in dementia care, and understanding older adults.

Delivery combines online coursework and in-class sessions. UFV lists ACTA 10, ACTA 20, ACTA 30, and ACTA 40 online at 30 hours each, plus in-class courses (ACTA 50 pre-practicum, and ACTA 60, ACTA 70, ACTA 80). You also complete two practicums, including a 30-hour observational practicum and a 90-hour hands-on practicum.

UFV states that, after graduation, you are ready to work under the direction of a recreation professional to deliver programming in long-term care homes, assisted living settings, adult day care programs, client homes, mental health homes, or residential group homes.
