Introduction

Cabinetmaking (Joinery) is a program taught at University of the Fraser Valley, Canada. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (1 year) options.

UFV’s Cabinetmaking (Joinery) certificate trains students as cabinetmakers (joiners) to design, build, repair, and re-style wooden cabinets and related fixtures. Students work with woods and laminates to make cabinetry and furnishings, including doors, windows, stairs, wall units, tables, millwork, and bookshelves, using technical drawings and specifications.

The program includes instruction on CAD drafting software for designing cabinets and furniture, operating computer numerical control (CNC) routers to cut wood panels, and reading drawings to assemble complex designs. Students apply learning in a well-equipped shop with traditional tools and advanced woodworking technology.

After completion, students may enter the provincial apprenticeship program with full credit for Level 1. The program also prepares graduates to work in small shops with basic equipment or in industrial facilities with advanced woodworking technology.
