Doctoral Programme in Philosophy
Introduction
The Doctoral Programme in Philosophy at Tampere University leads to the Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Philosophy. It aims to give students a thorough knowledge of philosophy and their own dissertation topic. Tampere University lists its current fields of expertise as the research of human reason, social and political philosophy, metaphysics, research ethics, and the history of philosophy from early modern and modern philosophy to twentieth-century traditions.
The programme totals 240 ECTS credits. It is organised into three parts: General academic competences, Discipline- and field-specific studies, and a Doctoral Dissertation. The first two parts total 40 ECTS credits, and the dissertation is 200 ECTS credits. Each doctoral student prepares a personal study and supervisory plan with the supervisors. Studies and supervision are intended to last four years. The degree includes completing the required doctoral studies, writing a doctoral dissertation, and defending it in public.
Tampere University says graduates can conduct independent research, work in co-operation with other disciplines, and provide instruction based on their research. The page says graduates are employed in research, teaching, public relations and the publishing sector, and as experts such as specialists in science administration.
