The Bachelor of Science (Biopharmaceutical Chemistry) at University of Galway is designed to build foundations in chemistry and biology and develop skills to design and understand modern medicines. Year 1 covers core chemistry, physics, and biology, plus maths, computer science, or applied maths. Year 2 includes chemistry pathways in chemistry and biochemistry, pharmacology, and a research skills project. Year 3 adds advanced topics in drug design, molecular biology, and genetics.
Delivery is on campus over 4 years. The curriculum includes a paid work placement of 20–26 weeks within Ireland’s biopharma industry, plus specialist study in Year 4 such as bioorganic and biopharmaceutical chemistry, biotechnologies, and advanced analytical techniques. In Year 4, students complete a research dissertation with placement or an on-campus project with elective modules.
Students also have the opportunity to apply to spend a semester abroad in Asia (Hong Kong), the USA, or Europe in year 3. University of Galway states the course produces graduates ready for employment in biopharmaceutical industries.
