Bachelor of Science (Genetics and Genomics)
Introduction
Bachelor of Science (Genetics and Genomics) is a Bachelor program taught at University of Galway, Ireland. Intake: September. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 Years) options.
University of Galway’s Bachelor of Science (Genetics and Genomics) is an on-campus undergraduate degree that combines biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and genetics and genomics. In the first year, you study foundational principles for living systems and develop scientific research skills. In the second year, you learn genetic-level techniques for humans, animals, plants, and microbes, and how statistics, data analysis, and computer algorithms support genetic data study.
In the third year, the programme covers molecular genetic processes such as cell cycle, DNA replication, and gene expression, with practical molecular biology training.
You also undertake genomics data analysis and bioinformatics, plus career development and employability skills modules, along with electives such as developmental biology, microbiology, plant and agricultural genetics, statistics, or mathematical methods in genomic analysis.
You can study abroad for the second half of third year, with Genetics and Genomics options at Uppsala University (Sweden) or University of Groningen (Netherlands).
In the fourth year, you attend visiting international seminar speakers and complete an independent research project of your choosing, supervised by an academic member of staff, usually as part of a research team. You also complete a literature review project under guidance from another academic member of staff. The programme further develops cellular and molecular biology, chromosome biology, and modern biotechnologies, including applying artificial intelligence in genomics and medical genomics data analysis with a major focus on cancer.
