Calligraphy is a Bachelor program taught at Wayo Women's University, Japan. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.
The Calligraphy program in the Japanese Literature and Culture department focuses on theory and practice through study of calligraphy history and writing theory, plus skill-based classes. Students work with theory subjects such as Chinese calligraphy history, characters studies, old manuscripts studies, and calligraphy theory. Practical subjects include regular script methods, cursive script methods, seal script methods, and kana calligraphy methods.
The curriculum is organised across an early foundation stage and later specialisation. Students study broad foundations in Japanese literature and language, then move into balanced instruction in practical skills and theory. Course work includes calligraphy training with an overseas component for a “calligraphy training” class and practical learning through “Calligraphy Special Seminar A・B” at a seminar house. In the final year, students create a graduation thesis and graduation work, then present them in a solo-style exhibition where each student handles exhibition tasks.
