Diploma in English

Diploma in English is a Diploma program taught at Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (01 Year) options.

The Diploma in English Language and Literature at the Open University of Sri Lanka is a one-year academic programme designed to enhance students’ English language and communication skills. It also introduces students to major literary genres: poetry, fiction, and drama.

Students study Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Structure of English Language, Introduction to Poetry, Introduction to Fiction, and Introduction to Drama. The programme includes a selection test for candidates required to sit for it, held as an on-site paper-based examination in regional centres. The programme is conducted by the Department of Language Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the medium is Language/English.

The minimum requirements for admission in Diploma in English at Open University of Sri Lanka for all applicants (Domestic or International) are:

• program specific academic requirment set by Open University of Sri Lanka.
• English Language OR any other language requirments as set by Open University of Sri Lanka as pre-requiste for admission in Diploma in English.

Candidates must be over 18 and have fulfilled at least ONE of the following criteria.

• Passed the OUSL Certificate in Professional English (After 2012) with a minimum of 3 “C” passes; or
• Passed the OUSL Advanced Certificate in English for Business and Professional Communication Stage II, with a minimum of two B+ grades for Writing Skills and Reading and Comprehension, and two B- grades for Listening & Speech Skills and Business Communication; or
• Passed the OUSL Advanced Certificate in English for Professional Communication, with a minimum of two B grades for LEC2525 (Reading in the Professional Environment) and LEC2527 (Writing Skills in the Workplace); or,
• Obtained three (3) passes at the G.C.E. A/L and a pass at the Selection Test conducted by the Department of Language Studies; or
• Passed any Foundation Course offered by the OUSL and a pass at the Selection Test conducted by the Department of Language Studies; or
• Obtained an equivalent or any other higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the OUSL and a pass at the Selection Test conducted by the Department of Language Studies.
