PhD On Sail is a PhD program taught at ZHdK - Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland. Intake: Summer. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
Laboratorio Laguna – Artistic PhD on Sail brings together artistic PhD candidates and PhD supervisors from visual arts, music, architecture, performance, and design. The focus includes experiences in Venice’s lagoon, framed through ideas such as “Sensing the Planet” and “Venice as a Method, not as a Topic,” linking cultural and ecological conditions, including the impacts of the climate crisis.
Participants work during a summer gathering in Venice using small sailboats and lagoon routes, balancing the boats through wind and tide as they coordinate within a multi-boat ensemble. The program also includes hands-on lagoon activities, such as going onto a sandbank, catching and cooking Blue Crabs, and observing how ecosystems and canal forms shape the lagoon’s conditions.
The Artistic PhD on Sail is organized as a PhD academy supported by the UdK Berlin, Uniarts Helsinki, and the Kunstuniversität Linz, together with ZHdK, and is carried by the collective Biennale Urbana and U5, along with Florian Dombois and other named leaders.
