PhD African Studies
Introduction
PhD African Studies is a PhD program taught at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (3 years full-time or 6 years part-time) options.
The PhD African Languages and Cultures provides supervision for research leading to MPhil and PhD degrees within the broad general area of African studies. Students work on research topics that may include the study of a language, literature, or any performing arts that falls within the African Languages, Cultures and Literatures Department’s core expertise, with potential for joint supervision for wider topic range.
All students register in year 1 as MPhil students. The upgrade from MPhil to PhD takes place at the end of the first academic session for full-time students (or at the end of the second academic session for part-time students).
In year 1, students follow generic training with a compulsory semester-one module and an optional semester-two module, then submit a 5,000 word piece for the Common Core Research Module and prepare a core chapter and research proposal.
Research continues in year 2 and thesis writing is in year 3, with thesis assessment and potential continuation status.
