Introduction

PhD Chinese and Inner Asian Studies is a PhD program taught at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (3 years full-time or 6 years part-time) options.

The PhD Chinese and Inner Asian Studies at SOAS is a research and thesis programme supervised by the China and Inner Asia Department. Students study Chinese and Inner Asia cultural and linguistic subjects using literary, documentary, and archive materials in relevant languages and/or fieldwork conducted in those languages.

All students register as MPhil students. The upgrade from MPhil to PhD takes place after the first academic session for full-time students, or after the second academic session for part-time students. Students work with a primary and secondary supervisor and a supervisory committee, follow Doctoral School research training, submit a Common Core Research Module piece of work, and progress through research, seminar presentations, thesis writing, and assessment by the supervisory committee.

The programme leads to the award of a PhD from SOAS. SOAS states that alumni are found in academic and government posts, journalism and other media, museums and art galleries, aid agencies, libraries and charities, medicine, and large and small businesses.
