PhD Creative Arts and Cultural Industries
Introduction
PhD Creative Arts and Cultural Industries is a PhD program taught at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (3 years full-time) options.
SOAS’ PhD Creative Arts and Cultural Industries is a research degree for doctoral-level training in the intersection of arts and cultural production and the cultural economy. The programme focuses on Cultural and Creative Industries practice and policy, work and social justice in the cultural industries. Areas include curation, the politics of cultural production, independent cultural economies and moral economies.
Students follow a research training course shared across the School of Arts in year one, with dedicated breakout sessions. They may take postgraduate courses such as Theory and Method in Ethnomusicology or Theory and Method in Art History, depending on prior qualifications and research project requirements.
Students submit a Research Proposal/Upgrade Paper of about 12,000 words and complete an oral exam (viva voce). After upgrade, students proceed to thesis writing, with an English thesis not exceeding 100,000 words, excluding bibliography and appendix.
The programme is delivered through supervision by a panel of two academics (lead and second supervisor), sometimes adding a third supervisor. SOAS notes that most research students spend some time doing fieldwork in the regions of their research. Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded a PhD in Creative Arts and Cultural Industries.
