Introduction

Sustainable Marine Craft and Superyacht Design MSc is a Masters program taught at Southampton Solent University, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

Southampton Solent University’s MSc Sustainable Marine Craft and Superyacht Design focuses on engineering knowledge and technical design skills for designing marine craft typically between 24 metres and 120 metres in length. Alongside practical design projects, students study Naval Architecture Structures and Systems, Sustainable Marine Design, Wind Assisted Vessel Design, and Powered Craft Design Development, with Marine Craft Production Management and Marine Craft Dissertation.

Students work in Solent’s marine design CAD suite, using drafting, modelling, and analytical software. The course includes hull lines fairing to develop hull geometry, plus 2D CAD drawings and 3D computer generated models. Students also have access to a 60 metres long tow tank to test and analyse performance, then develop sail or wing plans or the powertrain. The course may finish with a dissertation alongside a commercial design office or production facility.

The course can lead to worldwide careers including naval architect, designer, production manager, stylist, and systems engineer. It is ideally suited to students with an undergraduate degree in large ship design, engineering, architecture, or technical product design, or to students with practical seagoing experience of working vessels who wish to pursue marine design for complex sustainable vessels between 24m and 120m.
