Film Production BA
Introduction
Film Production BA is a Bachelor program taught at Southampton Solent University, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
Southampton Solent University’s BA (Hons) Film Production trains students from idea development to festival-ready work through a practice-led curriculum. Students are taught by industry practitioners and film scholars and follow a block structure that supports each stage of filmmaking, from concept to completion.
In the first year, students build foundations across four interconnected blocks and develop film ideas into a five- to six-minute fiction film, covering film theory, creative development, screenwriting, production roles, cinematography, and post-production.
The second year focuses on global film movements and cinematic aesthetics, includes crew-role rotation, and offers a choice between documentary practice or commercials and music video production using virtual production, followed by a two-stage development and production process for a 10-minute film.
In the final year, students complete a major film project with specialisms in directing, cinematography, or post-production, plus learning fundraising, audience strategy, and career planning.
Teaching uses industry-standard facilities, including professional camera equipment, post-production suites, and a virtual production stage for green screen shooting and virtual environments. Students also use edit suites with software including Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, and ProTools, and they can screen work in a digital cinema with 2K projection and Dolby Atmos sound. The course leads to roles in film and screen industries such as director, producer, cinematographer, editor, sound designer, art director, and assistant director.
