Southampton Solent University’s Maritime Engineering BEng (Hons) combines academic study with practical design skills in commercial vessel design and production management, with an emphasis on engineering. You study modules including Naval Architecture Design, Marine Design Skills, Mechanics and Materials, Applied Technology Design, plus ship design and production management modules such as Ship Design Concepts, Composite Technology, and Ship Production Management.

The course is structured into year one, year two, and final year, ending with a Dissertation. Delivery includes practical design briefs, demonstrations of marine systems, and technical work such as stability analysis using commercially available software and a Hydrodynamic Design Technology report based on computational fluid dynamics case studies.

You also work with specialist facilities including naval architecture software in the maritime design suite, a fully equipped specialist composite workshop, a 60m hydrodynamic test tank, and a static four-metre stability tank.

This degree is for students who want maritime design and production management skills, with an interest in maritime engineering and practical design and ideally a mathematical or physics-based background.
