Southampton Solent University’s BEng (Hons) Yacht Design and Production focuses on yacht design with production techniques. Students use industry-based software, including AutoCAD and Maxsurf, to design concepts that can be scaled up to bigger vessels. During the course, they work on a theoretical sailing yacht and learn through lectures how to sail a theoretical sailing model yacht.

The programme includes a final model yacht race event where students build a model yacht from a pre-existing kit. Students assemble a wood hull, paint it, cut the sails, and then complete rigging along with keel and rudder design. The course also includes practical sailing experience, where students bring a design to the water to see how it performs and learns how balance affects straight-line movement.
