Introduction

Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, BA (Hons) and MEng is a Masters program taught at University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

University of Cambridge’s Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology course looks at how processes can make products in a sustainable way. Chemical engineers make chemical products from raw materials, while biotechnologists use living systems and organisms to make products. The course teaches the scientific principles used by both, including topics such as sustainability, process calculations, fluid mechanics, and chemical and biochemical product design.

Teaching is mostly through lectures supported by projects, laboratory classes, supervisions, and coursework. Students attend lectures each week and complete increasing amounts of project work. In the first years, there is a significant amount of laboratory work, followed by a team design project for a plant making a chemical or biological product. Assessment uses written examinations and coursework.

Students can graduate after 3 years with a BA degree, but most students stay on for the fourth year for the BA and MEng degrees. Graduates may work as engineers in the process industries, research scientists, or technical managers.
