Introduction

Education Studies is a Bachelor program taught at California State University, Hayward, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Education Studies major at Spelman College is an integrated learning experience. It is designed to build a foundation in education, develop culturally competent skills, and help students think critically about how education and schooling connect with social, cultural, political, and economic forces. The major suits students preparing for careers that involve issues related to individuals and educational institutions, or students seeking a broad introduction to educational issues.

The program includes immersive, hands-on learning. Students are required to complete a yearlong internship experience in their senior year through internships in local organizations and service-learning projects in education settings. Students are also encouraged to study abroad, and the Education Department offers a study abroad trip to Cuba that looks at education using a comparative and international lens.

This major does not lead to a teaching certificate. It can precede graduate study for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) or Master of Arts in Education (MAED), and it may also support later plans such as teacher certification programs at the graduate level or other careers in education.
