Introduction

English (Certifiable for Elementary Education), BS is a teacher preparation program in elementary education for grades PreK through 6. It fulfills the required Subject Matter Major portion of the curriculum for elementary teaching certification in Connecticut, qualifying the certificate holder to teach PreK to grade 6.

The program focuses on a sequence of pre-professional courses for about four semesters, followed by professional courses during the final four semesters after acceptance into the Professional Program in Education. There is an overlap of some coursework across each half of the studies. The curriculum includes surveys of British, American, and World literature, advanced courses in these areas, Introduction to Literary Studies, and Linguistics, plus additional literacy and elementary-focused coursework such as writing, Children’s and Young Adult literature, and a course requiring Oral Performance. The total program consists of 130 credit hours and includes a student teaching semester when students are not allowed to take any other coursework.
