Introduction

Deaf Culture and American Sign Language Studies is a program taught at Cosumnes River College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Deaf Culture and American Sign Language Studies program at Cosumnes River College is designed to introduce students to Deaf Culture and American Sign Language (ASL) Studies. Students develop foundational communication skills for meaningful interaction with members of the Deaf community and also study Deaf cultural practices, values, and lived experiences. Course content is grounded in the Deafhood framework and includes American Sign Language, Deaf Education, Deaf Literature, Deaf Arts, and Baby Signs.

Students complete an Associate in Arts (A.A.) in Deaf Studies made up of required ASL courses and Deaf Studies courses, including American Sign Language I, II, III, and IV, plus Introduction to American Deaf Culture, Introduction to American Deaf Education, and Deaf Art. Students also complete additional elective units selected from options that include Fingerspelling, Classifiers and Numbers; Creative Signs; and American Sign Language Literature. The program supports learning outcomes in cultural interaction, respectful communication, and ASL conversation skills.

This degree prepares students for entry-level positions such as paraprofessional services in an individual or group setting, in an educational or social services agency that serves Deaf consumers. It is also described as supporting students who want psychosocial dynamics for work in educational or social service settings or to pursue an advanced degree at a four-year institution.
