Journalism, B.A. is a Bachelor program taught at Humboldt State University, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The Journalism, B.A. at Humboldt State University is designed to prepare students for careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, or related fields. It covers the rights, responsibilities, and role of the mass media, along with contemporary media issues in race, gender, equity, law, and ethics. Students practice critical thinking and learn to challenge societal norms and narratives through their coursework in media studies, news, and public relations.
The program uses small classes taught by faculty with major media experience and ties to media professionals. Students build hands-on portfolios by creating content for student publications and for the student-run radio station. They produce multimedia outputs including podcasts, videos, photos, graphic designs, web pages, and advertisements, and they can also gain experience through reporting, interviewing, and writing news stories, along with photojournalism, video and podcast production, media management, and entrepreneurship.
Students can concentrate in Media Studies, News, or Public Relations. Media Studies focuses on audience research, ethics and news coverage, media law, and how culture shaped by social class, race, gender, and identity is presented through media. News includes reporting, interviewing, writing, and media production. Public Relations includes public relations courses and internship opportunities that support local organizations. The program prepares graduates for media, public relations, and advertising roles, and it also supports pathways to graduate or law school.
