Marine Biology, B.S. is a Bachelor program taught at Humboldt State University, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The Marine Biology, B.S. program uses the nearby Pacific Ocean and North Coast as a living lab. Students study marine organisms and ecosystems through field-based learning. They collect living marine organisms aboard the Coral Sea, a 90-foot ocean-going research vessel, and analyze them back at Humboldt’s Marine Lab near campus. Students also use the Telonicher Marine Lab, which pumps, filters, and recirculates seawater into tanks.
The curriculum includes required courses across the field: Zoology, Botany, Phycology (marine algae), Invertebrate Zoology (sponges to sea urchins), Oceanography, Intertidal Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Biology, and Evolution. First-year, first-time students majoring in Marine Biology and Oceanography are automatically enrolled in Rising Tides, a place-based learning community with science and general education courses and activities focused on Humboldt and Trinidad bays in Humboldt County.
Undergraduate students access marine lab facilities and conduct research directly with faculty. The program includes access to seven marine ecosystems: salt marshes, rocky shores, kelp forests, sandy beaches, the deep sea, lagoons, and estuaries.
