Introduction

National University’s Doctorate of Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT) is a 100% online program designed to prepare students for clinical work in couple and family therapy behavioral health. The curriculum includes program development and evaluation, grant writing, advanced systemic practice, advanced clinical education, and research coursework. Students also complete research, clinical, and internship planning that culminates in a doctoral portfolio and an applied doctoral project aligned with marriage and family therapy.

The DMFT can be completed with a minimum of 60 credits, and the program overview also lists “Total Credit Hours: At Least 63 Credit Hours.” Core and specialization courses run 8 weeks, while practicum and dissertation courses run 12 weeks. Students complete a doctoral internship that is 9 months and 20 hours per week, with an in-person supervisor meeting for a minimum of 4 hours per month. Completion time is recommended at 54 months, with year-round enrollment.

Graduates are prepared to provide clinical services, supervise other clinicians, serve in administrative positions, and oversee mental health practices. Students can tailor the program through one of eight professionally relevant specializations: Child and Adolescent Therapy, Couple Therapy, General Family Therapy, Systemic Administration and Entrepreneurship, Systemic Organizational Leadership, and Therapy with Military Families.
