Communications Design, BFA (Emphasis in Illustration) is a Bachelor program taught at Pratt Institute, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 Years) options.
Communications Design, BFA (Emphasis in Illustration) is an undergraduate program in the School of Design. Students build a body of work by using typography, photography, illustration, and/or animation to construct narratives and convey complex information. They also identify communication challenges and develop strategic solutions. The curriculum includes second-year coursework on design theories, methodologies, and skills, and upper-level studio work focused on more complex projects and an illustration emphasis.
Students in the Illustration Emphasis take upper-level studio courses that focus on image-based communication, including advanced storytelling, socio-political commentary, and authorship. Upper-level courses encourage experimentation with multiple technologies, platforms, and techniques. Electives support exploration of contemporary illustration practice, including graphic novels, animation and 3D modeling, independent publishing, production design, and character design.
The program uses studios, maker spaces, and labs for hands-on production. Students can use production labs to discover, iterate, and refine investigations across different media. Course options and sample courses include Graphic Design Intensive and a Senior Thesis, along with projects such as Form and Code.
