Fashion Design, BFA is a Bachelor program taught at Pratt Institute, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years (8 semesters)) options.
The Fashion Design BFA at Pratt Institute prepares students to design from broad social and cultural perspectives, responding to issues shaping the world. Students cultivate their practice through material exploration and experimentation, with a focus on purposeful material resources, contextual relevance, embodiment, and identity. Coursework includes 2D and 3D construction, design + materiality, knit structures, drape & construct, and contextualizing fashion.
Learning is hands-on, combining traditional and digital making methods. Students use facilities and tools including Shima Seiki 3-D knitting machines, 3-D printers, laser cutters, and Framis NOSO technology, plus access to a Textile Research Library and a Textile Dye Garden. Students are required to complete three credits of internship during the course of study, guided by a Pratt faculty adviser, and they participate in annual design competitions.
Students are positioned to work with materials and sustainable practices when making design decisions. They also develop ways to communicate design philosophy with evidence from fashion history, theory, and contemporary culture focused on justice, equity, and social responsibility.
