Introduction

History of Art and Design, BFA is a Bachelor program taught at Pratt Institute, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The History of Art and Design BFA at Pratt Institute develops studio practice alongside liberal arts study. Students study the philosophy, literature, and criticism of the history of art and design through specially designed foundation courses, survey classes, studio training, and electives. The program includes theory and methodology, chemistry of art, and a senior seminar for completion.

The degree is organized around studio classes taught by active professional artists, plus writing-focused coursework. Students also take liberal arts courses (English, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and foreign language). Electives and seminars allow study across film and design, architecture, non-Western, pre-Renaissance, Renaissance to Rococo, and 19th-, 20th-, or 21st-century art and design, theory and methodology, and chemistry of art. Students can take internships in the New York City art world and participate in summer intensives in London and Paris, as well as a six-week program in Venice.

Students learn to write and research analytically about works of art and to connect meaning to social, political, and economic contexts through time. The program leads to work after graduation at organizations such as the Christie’s Design Department, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and World Monuments Fund, and it also prepares students for advanced study at graduate programs including Harvard University, the University of Southern California, the University of Edinburgh, Oxford University, and the Victoria and Albert/Royal College of Art master’s programs.
