The Elementary/Middle Level Education: Grades 4-8, Science and Social Studies Concentration (BSEd) program prepares students to obtain the certification required to teach grades 4-8 in Pennsylvania’s public school system. Students focus on supporting middle level students’ academic growth in science and social studies, with science experiences that include scientific inquiry, life sciences, earth and space sciences, physical sciences, environment and ecology, and technology and engineering.
Social studies learning experiences focus on history, geography, economics, civics, and government. The degree requires core concentration courses in science and social studies, professional core courses covering adolescent development and learning, instructional methods, assessment and intervention, adaptation and accommodations for diverse learners, and literacy, plus a capstone seminar and a practicum in middle level student teaching.
The program requires a total of 120 credit hours, including 46–47 credit hours of general education courses, six credit hours of concentration area courses in science, six credit hours of concentration area courses in social studies, six credit hours of required math courses, and 39 credit hours of core professional courses.
