Introduction

Theatre and Performance is a Bachelor program taught at Spelman College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The Spelman College Theatre and Performance major uses an interdisciplinary approach to performance, writing, and design through experimentation and exploration. Students explore performance modalities with text, film, songs, and site-specific areas, and they study performance, theatre studies, and the creative industries through coursework in four areas: the core; literature, history and criticism; performance; and technical theatre/management.

The major consists of 48 semester credits. The core requires all courses listed for 40 credit hours, including four semesters of production lab and two department electives. Core modules include First-year Division of the Arts Seminar, Sophomore Division of the Arts Seminar, Performance Ensemble, Principles of Acting, Introduction to Technical Theatre and Design, Production Lab, Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Breath, Voice, and Movement, Playwriting, Scenography I, Directing, and Hip Pocket Solo Works.

Majors participate in departmental productions by performing or doing back-stage work in at least four productions. Students are required to attend general auditions at the beginning of each academic year and to audition for each departmental production.
