Introduction

Physical Education is a Bachelor program taught at State University of New York at Cortland, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Physical Education Bachelor of Science (B.S.) at SUNY Cortland combines physical education theory with hands-on practice. Students learn leadership and practical skills for implementing physical education curriculum in schools, along with effective teaching, curriculum, and assessment practices. The program also covers a broad spectrum of fitness, sports, and lifelong physical activities, and it includes certification to coach interscholastic sports.

Instruction includes early field experiences in schools. Students use specialized indoor activity areas such as an ice arena, an Olympic-sized pool, two dance studios, a gymnastics gymnasium, multiple all-purpose gymnasiums, squash/racquetball courts, and a wrestling room. Specialized outdoor areas include a field house with a synthetic floor surface, tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, and a multipurpose athletic complex with two turf fields and an all-weather 400 meter track.

This major leads to New York state certification to teach physical education to grades K-12. Career paths listed include K-12 physical education teacher, adapted physical education teacher, adapted physical education specialist for hospitals, children’s centers and community-based programs, and educator at an outdoor center.
