Bachelor's in Communication Studies
Introduction
Communication Studies at State University of New York at Cortland is a Bachelor of Arts program. The major builds a foundation in human communication and focuses on how meaning-making through words, images, symbols, or technology shapes culture and identity. Students also study how strategic communication influences human judgment and actions, and they strengthen critical thinking to become ethical producers and consumers of messages.
Students choose elective courses within the major to design a program aligned with personal learning objectives and career goals. The program includes opportunities to take part in one or more internships, which may be on campus, in the Cortland community, or in neighboring cities such as Ithaca or Syracuse.
The degree connects to career areas sampled from Career Services’ Handshake portal, including advertising, business, government, journalism, media production, and public relations. Students can also get involved through activities such as writing for the university newspaper, hosting a radio show, producing TV programs, or editing a magazine.
