Art + Design—Illustration BFA
Introduction
Art + Design—Illustration BFA is a Bachelor program taught at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
Art + Design: Illustration (BFA) focuses on understanding and applying meaning to visual communication. Students explore specialized areas including book illustration, character development, concept art, and documentary illustration. The program also emphasizes the fundamental principles of color, composition, drawing, and rendering, with work that builds a personal illustration style.
The curriculum combines traditional studio media—drawing, painting, and printmaking—with contemporary electronic media. Students work with faculty on tools, techniques, and surfaces; symbolism, sequencing, and advanced perspective; and the integration of digital processes. The degree requires 78 credits in courses related to the major and 120 credits overall, and students build a professional portfolio and learn business aspects of illustration.
Students can gain experience through internships with organizations such as Edward Gorey House Museum and Hasbro. The BFA is described as preparing graduates for careers in animation, illustration, multimedia design, and scientific visualization, as well as for graduate study.
