Introduction

Arts and Sciences Exploratory is a program taught at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Arts and Sciences Exploratory Program helps students who are undecided to explore an array of disciplines and decide on a major. Students explore multiple majors to make an informed choice about an area of study, with guidance from faculty and career advisors.

In the first semester, students take a special selection of core courses chosen for them. These courses meet university studies and college distribution requirements and introduce critical reading and writing, plus introductory courses in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and sciences.

Students also take courses across social science disciplines such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, crime and justice studies, economics, political science, policy studies, and women’s studies, and humanities disciplines including English, history, philosophy, foreign literature and languages, Portuguese, art history, and music.

Students are not required to select a major right away, with a final decision made at the end of the first semester of sophomore year. The program includes work with the Career Development Center for self-assessment and exploration, advising from a professional advisor, and opportunities for internships, which generally take place in the junior or senior year after a major is declared.
