Introduction

Theater Arts is a Bachelor program taught at West Valley College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Associate of Arts in Theater Arts at West Valley College prepares students to transfer to a bachelor’s program (BFA or BA) in Acting and Technical Theater. The program embeds Stage Tech and Acting pathways within a 60-unit associate degree and meets the requirements of the first two years for a BA or BFA in Theater. Acting coursework explores theatrical, television, and improvisational styles in both theory and live stage practicum. Technical Theater coursework covers stage design, lighting design, makeup, costumes, and set & prop construction.

Students complete Major Core Requirements (8 units) and then complete either the Acting Pathway or the Technical Theater Pathway. Coursework includes studio and mainstage theater production workshops, musical theater production workshops, and performance practicums such as Summer Production: Performance Practicum or Summer Production: Technical Practicum. The program emphasizes live stage practicum alongside production-focused instruction to support success in upper-division theater coursework.

This degree is designed for transfer into upper-division acting or technical theater coursework and for work as professional actors or professional stagehands, depending on the pathway completed. Possible theater careers include Actor (theater or film), Stage Manager, Theater Manager, Drama Teacher/Professor, Private Vocal Coach, and Special Events Planner (Stage).
